With Christmas quickly approaching, I wanted to make a few homemade ornaments to add to our Christmas tree. Although the star and wreath ornament crochet patterns have already posted, this one is my favorite! I wanted a simple cross ornament … an ornament to remind us of the reason for the season … an ornament to remind us of our Savior’s birth.
Without further ado, the free Cross Ornament crochet pattern is below …
Crocheted Cross Ornament
The Crocheted Cross Ornament is approximately 4″ high, 3.5″ wide
To create the ornament, the following materials are necessary: J crochet hook, medium weight yarn (2 different colors), yarn needle (to weave in ends), and scissors.
Directions:
Rnd 1: MC – Ch 6. Sl st with the 1st ch to join.
Rnd 2: MC – Ch 1. Complete 8 sc in the loop. Sl st with the 1st sc to join.
Rnd 3: MC – Ch 8. Sl st in the same st (1st st). Complete 1 sl st in each of the 2nd and 3rd st. Ch 8 and complete another sl st in the 3rd st to create a loop. Complete 1 sl st in each of the 4th and 5th st. Ch 12 and complete another sl st in the 5th st to create a loop. Complete 1 sl st in each of the 6th and 7th st. Ch 8 and complete another sl st in the 7th st to create a loop. Complete 1 sl st in the 8th st.
Rnd 4: MC – Complete 12 dc in the top loop (1st loop) and 1 sl st in the sl st between the 1st and 2nd loops. Complete 12 dc in the 2nd loop and 1 sl st in the sl st in between the 2nd and 3rd loops. Complete 18 dc in the 3rd loop (bottom loop) and 1 sl st in the sl st in between the 3rd and 4th loops. Complete 12 dc in the 4th loop and 1 sl st in the sl st in between the 4th and 1st loops completing the body of the cross. Knot to end. Trim strands, weaving them into the back of the cross.
Rnd 5: CC – With CC yarn, sl st on at the top center of the top loop. Complete 1 sl st in each dc on the 1st half of the 1st loop. Complete 1 sl st in the sl st that is in between the 1st and 2nd loop. Then, complete 1 sl st threading through the center of the cross.
Proceed to the 2nd loop. Complete 1 sl st in each dc on the 2nd loop. Complete 1 sl st in the sl st in between the 2nd and 3rd loops. Then, complete 1 sl st threading through the center of the cross. Repeat these steps for the 2 remaining loops and the remaining portion of the 1st loop. Sl st with the 1st sl st.
To create the hanging loop, ch 15. Sl st in the 1st sl st to create a loop. Knot to end. Trim strands, weaving them into the back of the cross.
Abbreviations: CC – contrasting color, ch – chain, dc – double crochet, MC – main color, rnd – round, sc – single crochet, sl st – slip stitch, st – stitch
