I have to admit … a few years ago I was terrified at the thought of completing Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) and Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc) stitches. I mainly stuck to my “comfort” stitches of chains, single crochets and double crochets … but FPdc and BPdc stitches have opened my eyes to a variety of projects.
Currently I am working on the Sylvan Peak Beanie and Fingerless Mittens Set (shown in the picture). This set is beautiful and is composed primarily of FPdc and BPdc stitches! I created several last year as Christmas gifts, but never published the pattern. This year I am creating a set for myself … and I can’t wait to see it finished! (I’ll have the crochet pattern available soon!)
Another pattern that uses BPdc stitches is the “Mermaid Tail & Headband” crochet pattern in size Newborn. This creates an awesome photo prop for Newborn photos and has an incredible texture! (See link below.)

The “Mrs. Claus’ Santa Hat & Skirt Set” is one of my top sellers! Although subtle, it also uses FPdc stitches to create the textured waistband at the top of the skirt and the thick white ruffle at the bottom of the skirt. (See link below.)

Although these examples are simple in design, FPdc and BPdc stitches can be used to create intricate cables. The possibilities are endless! So … without further ado …
Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc)
1. Yarn over and insert the crochet hook from the front of your work to the back around the post of the stitch and then back to the front on the other side of the post.
2. Yarn over and pull the crochet hook back to the original/first side of the post (will have 3 loops on the hook).
3. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops.
4. Yarn over and draw through the final 2 loops.
Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc)
1. Yarn over and insert the crochet hook from the back of your work to the front around the post of the stitch and returning to the back on the other side of the post.
2. Yarn over and pull the crochet hook back to the original/first side of the post (will have 3 loops on the hook).
3. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops.
4. Yarn over and draw through the final 2 loops.
Happy Crocheting!
