Wowzers! Where has January gone? I feel like 2020 has just begun, and it’s almost February!!! With February comes pinks and reds and hearts and chocolates … everything we think of when we think of Valentine’s Day. And what better than a sweet little crocheted hat for your baby girl (… or a friend’s baby girl) for Valentine’s Day.

The Simply Sweet Baby Girl Hat was one of my first patterns to design. Since I still absolutely love it, I decided to give the pattern a little bit of an update and add more sizes! Now, the crochet pattern includes sizes that range from Preemie all the way to Toddler/Child!!! And even better, the Preemie/Newborn Small crochet pattern is FREE below!!!

Simply Sweet Baby Girl Hat Crochet Pattern

Size: Preemie/Newborn Small (approximately 11.5″ circumference)

Necessary Supplies: J Crochet Hook, Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 55 yd), Yarn Needle, and Scissors

Yarn Used: Caron Simply Sweet

Gauge: 14 dc approximately 4″ wide, 4 dc rows approximately 2″ high

Directions – Crochet Hat:

  • Rnd 1:Ch 2.  Complete 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook.  Sl st with the 1st sc to join.
  • Rnd 2:  Ch 1.  Complete 2 sc/st.  Sl st with the 1st sc to join (10 st)
  • Rnd 3:   Ch 2.  Complete 2 dc/st.  Sl st with the 1st dc to join.  (approximately 2” diameter)  (20 st)
  • Rnd 4:   Ch 2.  *Complete 2 dc in the 1st st and 1 dc in the 2nd st.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * * until the end.  Sl st with the 1st dc to join.  (approximately 3” diameter) (30 st)
  • Rnd 5:   Ch 2.  *Complete 2 dc in the 1st st and 1 dc in each of the 2nd through 5th st.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * * until the end.  Sl st with the 1st dc to join. (36 st)
  • Rnd 6:   Ch 1.  *Complete 1 sc in the 1st st, skip the 2nd st, complete 3 tr in the 3rd st, and skip the 4th st.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * *.  Sl st with the 1st sc to join.
  • Rnd 7:   Ch 3.  Complete 2 tr in the 1st sc (ch 3 = 1st tr) and 1 sc in the 2nd tr of the next 3 tr cluster.  *Complete 3 tr in the next sc and 1 sc in the 2nd tr of the next 3 tr cluster.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * * until the end.  Sl st with top ch of ch 3 to join.
  • Rnd 8:   Ch 1.  *Complete 1 sc in the 2nd tr of the 3 tr cluster and 3 tr in the next sc.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * * until the end.  Sl st with 1st sc to join.
  • Rnd 9:   Ch 3.  Complete 2 tr in the 1st sc (ch 3 = 1st tr) and 1 sc in the 2nd tr of the next 3 tr cluster.  *Complete 3 tr in the next sc and 1 sc in the 2nd tr of the next 3 tr cluster.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * * until the end.  Sl st with top ch of ch 3 to join.
  • Rnd 10: Ch 1.  *Complete 1 sc in the 2nd tr of the 3 tr cluster and 3 tr in the next sc.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * * until the end.  Sl st with 1st sc to join.
  • Rnd 11: Ch 3.  Complete 2 tr in the 1st sc (ch 3 = 1st tr) and 1 sl st in the 2nd tr of the next 3 tr cluster.  *Complete 3 tr in the next sc and 1 sl st in the 2nd tr of the next 3 tr cluster.*  Repeat pattern enclosed in the * * until the end.  Sl st with top ch of ch 3 to join.  Knot to end, weaving strands in the inside of the hat.

Directions – Crochet Small Bow:

  • Row 1:  Ch 31.
  • Row 2:  Skip 1st st and complete 1 dc/st in the 2nd – 31st st.  Ch 2 and turn.  (30 dc)
  • Row 3:  (Ch 2 = 1st dc)  Complete 1 dc/st in the 2nd – 30th st.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 4:  (Ch 2 = 1st dc)  Complete 1 dc/st in the 2nd – 30th st.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 5:  (Ch 2 = 1st dc)  Complete 1 dc/st in the 2nd – 30th st.  Knot to end.

Directions – Assemble the bow:

Sew the two ends of the bow together.  Flatten the bow with the seam on the back.  Pinch the middle of the bow and wrap the center of the bow approximately 8-10 times with yarn, pulling tightly.  Tie a knot on the back side of the bow. 

Directions – Assemble the bow to the hat:

Position the bow in the center of the hat, just below the double crochet rounds completed at the beginning of “Crochet Hat”.  Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the bow in place.  Knot to end.  Trim loose strands, tucking the strands in the inside of the hat.

The Simply Sweet Baby Girl Hat is now complete!
