Pretty Plump Pumpkin Crochet Pattern

Necessary Supplies: G Crochet Hook, Medium Weight Yarn – Main Color (approximately 120 yd), Medium Weight Yarn – Contrasting Color, Yarn Needle, Polyfill Stuffing, and Scissors

Yarn Used: Caron Simply Soft – Gold Ombre, Gauge: 18 dc approximately 4″ wide

Crochet Pumpkin Body

  • Row 1: Ch 36.
  • Row 2: Skip the 1st st.  Complete 1 sc in each of the 2nd – 9th st, 1 dc/st in each of the 10th – 28th st, and 1 sc in each of the 29th – 36th st.  (35)  Ch 1 and turn.
  • Row 3: (Ch 1 = 1st st)  Complete 1 sc in the 2nd – 8th st, 1 fpdc in each of the 9th – 27th st, and 1 sc in each of the 28th – 35th st.  (35)  Ch 1 and turn.
  • Row 4: (Ch 1 = 1st st)  Complete 1 sc in the 2nd – 8th st, 1 dc in each of the 9th – 27th st, and 1 sc in each of the 28th – 35th st.  (35)  Ch 1 and turn.
  • Row 5: (Ch 1 = 1st st)  Complete 1 sc in the 2nd – 8th st, 1 fpdc in each of the 9th – 27th st, and 1 sc in each of the 28th – 35th st.  (35)  Ch 1 and turn.
  • Repeat rows 4 and 5 eighteen times.  Knot and cut strand approximately 24-36” in length.  (The end strand will be used to assemble the pumpkin in step 2.)

Assemble and stuff pumpkin body

  • Position the pumpkin body so that the pumpkin body is oriented with the “wrong side” facing outward.  Align the side edges (“wrong side” facing outward, “right side” facing inward) and sew together using a yarn needle and the end strand from step 1.
  • Continue to the bottom edge (“wrong side” still facing outward).  With the yarn needle and existing strand, weave in and out of every other row completed in step 1 – threading through the single crochets on the outer edge.  (See reference pictures for more clarification.)  Pull strand tight to close.  If you still have a small opening at the base of your pumpkin, simply sew to close.  This can be done by threading your needle from one side to the other and pulling tight.  Repeat if necessary to completely close the opening.  Knot and trim strand, weaving inside the pumpkin.
  • Turn the pumpkin body right side out and stuff with polyfill stuffing.
  • With a new strand of yarn and the yarn needle, weave in and out of every other row on the top of the pumpkin.  Pull strand tight to close the pumpkin.  If you still have a small opening on the top of your pumpkin, simply sew to close.  This can be done by threading your needle from one side to the other and pulling tight.  Repeat if necessary to completely close the opening.  Knot and trim strand, weaving inside the pumpkin.

Shape Pumpkin (optional)

  • Cut a strand of yarn approximately 18 inches in length.  Squeeze the pumpkin at the bottom center and top center to create a “donut” shape.  Thread a crochet hook through the center of the pumpkin.  Loop the strand of yarn around the crochet hook and pull the strand through the center of the pumpkin.  (Note: A yarn needle can be used if easier.)  You should now have 1 strand of yarn through the center of the pumpkin with 1 end sticking out of the bottom of the pumpkin and 1 end sticking out of the top of the pumpkin.
  • Thread the crochet hook in again from the top of the pumpkin to the bottom of the pumpkin near the 1st spot.  Loop the yarn (end sticking out of bottom end of pumpkin) around the hook and pull the strand through to the top of the pumpkin.  Both ends should now be sticking out of the top of the pumpkin.  Pull the strands tight to permanently create the “donut” shape.  Knot to secure, weaving strands inside the pumpkin.

Crochet Pumpkin Stem

  • Rnd 1: Ch 2.  Complete 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Do NOT sl st to join.  Stitches will be continuously created in the round.  (4)
  • Rnd 2: Complete 2 sc in the 1st st, 1 sc in the 2nd st, 2 sc in the 3rd st, and 1 sc in the 4th st.  (6)

  • For the remaining rnds, crochet in both the back and front loops.

  • Rnd 7:  Complete 1 sc/st.  (12)
  • Rnd 8:  Complete 1 sc/st.  (12)
  • Rnd 9:  *Complete 1 invisible decrease in the 1st and 2nd st, 1 sc in the 3rd, and 1 sc in the 4th st.*  Repeat the pattern enclosed in the * * 2 more times.  (9)
  • Rnd 10:  Complete 1 sc/st.  (9)
  • Rnd 11:  Complete 1 sc/st.  (9)
  • Rnd 12:  Complete 1 sc/st.  (9)
  • Knot and cut strand approximately 12” in length.  This will be used to sew the stem onto the pumpkin.
  • Stuff the stem with polyfill stuffing.

Assemble Pumpkin Stem

  • Position the stem in the center of the top of the pumpkin.  Using the yarn tail and a yarn needle, sew the stem onto the pumpkin by sewing in the front loops of the last rnd of stitches on the stem.  (To attach, thread the needle into a stitch on the pumpkin and then up through the front loop on the last rnd of stitches on the stem.  Continue this around the edge of the pumpkin stem to secure the stem in place.)  Knot to end.  Weave strand into the inside of the stem.

The Pretty Plump Pumpkin is now complete!
